Filipinos are non-confrontational by nature. Understanding a few key concepts will help you fit in smoothly.

Hiya (Shame/Face)

Never embarass someone in public. Losing your temper or shouting at a worker causes them to "lose face" (hiya). It is considered extremely rude and will not get you what you want. Always handle conflicts privately and calmly.

Pakikisama (Getting Along)

This is the art of smooth interpersonal relationships. It often means going along with the group consensus to maintain harmony, even if you personally disagree.

Respect for Elders

Using "Po" and "Opo" when speaking to elders or people in authority is a sign of respect. The "Mano" gesture (taking an elder's hand to your forehead) is a beautiful tradition you might witness.
